Preserving Everyday Use [listen | video]

Many years later, found among laundry
Room coverings, a debasement, a no big

Deal two-tone vintage vessel, a rustic crock--
A farmhouse-style kitchen utility purposeful

For bean storage, perhaps fermenting--
However, the lid was missing.

Damp cloth wiped, cobweb dust removed,
The jar, now useful for what?

Ever the decorative value, if not for the
Inherent tradition, sensibility--stoneware from

The Clay Belt, a ceramic that surpassed the
Great Depression, salt glazed (umber/gray),

The humble colors of the Day(?), a cobalt-blue
Crown stamp well worn, meaty storage memories

Craze fine hairline cracks, a sign of age;
Surface pits and bumps, stylish imperfections

Transcend the primitive circumstances, the
Ideological flaws to surmount, ideas to figure out,

To prolong the belief, the relief that handicraft,
Even if homemade, is a benefit to interior design.
